Bulletproof Vests Crucial Protection For Police in Triad

A bulletproof vest is the reason a Winston-Salem Police Officer is still alive. Officer Nicholas Powell was shot in the chest during a traffic stop Monday morning. To get more news about bulletproof zone customer service, you can visit bulletproofboxs.com official website.

Departments make their own rules on if officers must wear bulletproof vests and here in the Triad, most agencies have a mandatory wear policy for each officer. The reason is pretty clear - the vests save lives.

"You read about officers shot and shooting situations and you realize that this is always a possibility and this is why I wear it to go home at the end of the night and be safe, and this is supposed to protect us and be able to make that happen," said Sergeant Neil Doss, Burlington Police Department.

Sergeant Neil Doss has worked for the Burlington Police Department for 10 years. BPD officers have two vests. One is for everyday wear and the other is used when officers know they're walking into an active shooter situation.

"It's a lightweight body armor, not really notice it in everyday wear, but it still has the level protection to defeat most handgun bullets that are shot at us during the normal course of duty," said Sgt. Doss.

He added, "There are multiple layers that are meant to slow down the bullet, disperse the impact and stop it."

Although the vest are designed to stop a bullet, they don't always protect the officer from being injured.

"It's going to wound you, you're going to break ribs, and you're going to be hurt. You are not going to get up. It's going to be painful but it's not going to let the bullet penetrate and do damage internally," said Sgt. Doss.

In addition to the standard issue vest, every Burlington Police Officer carries what are called active shooter vests.

"It comes with a ballistic helmet, and a ballistic vest that is rifle ready. We have rifle ready plates front and back to adapt and an additional layer of protection to stop rifle rounds."

Sgt. Doss added, "This vest we keep in the trunks of our vehicle so it is readily available at all times. If we are going to a call that is an active shooter, school shooting or know there is a suspect with a gun, we get out, we put this vest on first, throw it on over what we have and be able to work."
